People want sustainable products more than ever before. But they also want qualitative products.
Lotus Professional® brand uses recycled and virgin fibres coming from certified suppliers to meet the needs of today without jeopardizing our ability to do so in the future.
RECYCLED FIBRES
To do so, Georgia-Pacific invested in innovative solutions to recycle the fibre from production and post-consumer waste.
Production waste recovery
- Packaging materials – plastics, cardboard, wood – are entirely recycled at our facilities. Cutting losses and leftovers from tissue reels are returned to the paper-making process where they are recycled for efficient reuse.
But also, Post-consumer waste
- Georgia-Pacific Harmon Recycling is among the world’s largest buyers and sellers of waste paper, using 6 million tons of recovered paper and paperboard in its worldwide facilities. The company works with paper industries worldwide, efficiently recycling fibres for reuse. This reduces the amount of fibre in landfills or incinerators.
- Georgia-Pacific’s Hondouville site works with local communities to collect used beverage carton packaging, giving second life to used boxes. Cellulose fibres from used beverage carton packaging are extracted and integrated into our pulp production for recycled products. But post-consumer waste recovery does not stop here. As well as being among the first to develop this innovative technology, we are now preparing to reduce even associated waste.
VIRGIN FIBRES
Paper production requires water and energy, of course. But our main raw material is trees, a renewable resource.
It’s true: wood is among the most sustainable raw materials because it is a renewable resource.
The availability of plentiful, diverse and healthy forests is critical to our business. Little wonder, then, that we are active in support of sustainable forest management. Responsible forest stewardship ensures that we can continue to make the paper products that consumers want and need.
Sustainable forestry practices
Lotus Professional® supports sustainable forest management through our woodpulp procurement operations.
100% of the woodpulp we purchase for our facilities comes from certified suppliers who harvest wood legally.
In addition, we work with our wood and fibre suppliers to encourage them in their sustainable forestry practices. These practices include conservation of biodiversity hotspots and tropical wilderness areas throughout the world.
… and major forestry certification schemes
Georgia-Pacific acknowledges the major forestry certification schemes, including:
- The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)
- Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®)
- Sustainable Forest Initiative® (SFI®)
- Canadian Standards Association Sustainable Forest Management Standard (CSA)
We view competition among these programs as vital to continually improving the practice of sustainable forestry on all lands, but not all programs are applicable or relevant for all landowners and every region of the world.
… to combat illegal logging
Georgia-Pacific endorses the statement from the Confederation of the European Paper Industries (CEPI) issued in 2002 on the necessity to combat illegal logging.
Our company’s environmental progress has been tracked and reported publicly for more than 10 years. We’re proud of our history of sustainable responsibility and our performance in forestry stewardship. We work hard to improve on our record year after year, updating policies to incorporate current responsible, sustainable practices.
